Toratau. The Unique Mountain of Russia. Republic of Bashkortostan.

Toratau (Bashkir for "fortress mountain") is one of three shihans (single hills), located in 120km from the city of Ufa, the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan of Russia.

Once Toratau located in the Republic of Bashkortostan of Russia, on the land of bashkir people, the name Toratau consisted of two bashkir words “tora” what means “fortress” and “tau” what means “mountain”. So, "fortress mountain". In the medieval times there was the fortress of Bashkir Khan who control the area.

Toratau is part of emsemble of three shihan mountains located not far from each other. They are selected to the short list of the Miracles of Russia

The height of Toratau is 280 meters above the ground.

Toratau was based 230 million years ago and was a riff of the tropical sea.

The flora ofToratau includes over 400 kinds of plants. 25 of them are in the Red Book of plants (under the threat of extinction)

Yet in USSR times Toratau and two other shikhans nearby got to the list of the geological monuments as it represents a huge value for geological researches. It helps to understand the tectonic shifts in the Late Paleosoic era. It’s one of the most accessable former riffs for detail reseach and analisys.
